On-demand Service Market Is in High Demand

HTF Market Intelligence Consulting started off 2019 releasing results of its Global Online On-Demand Home Services study, which found the industry gaining traction worldwide.

In the wake of Uber’s immense popularity, on-demand services are offered through software applications that manage a variety of data to match consumers with service professionals in a variety of industries. According to HTF’s analysis, the growth in on-demand providers is driven primarily by their ability to answer needs in a convenient way that is cost-effective for all parties.

The gateway to on-demand service applications opened thanks to increased digitalization and smartphone penetration. Once Uber demonstrated the market was ready to boom, a host of players hopped on board the market train, supplying services from home cleaning, car repair, plumbing, dog walking and so much more. Plus, it helps match independent contractors with customers, propelling the local economy toward success.

The on-demand service market is touching almost every aspect of the service industry, particularly in these key areas.

Home Services

Home maintenance and repair is an industry that touches almost anyone. You never know when a pipe might burst, or an outlet needs replaced. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a repair person available on-demand to correct these issues when they happen?

A variety of on-demand home service contenders have emerged recently, to much fanfare.

Similar to Amazon’s Home Services consumer product, Fixer’s application lets users select a date and time for a handyman to arrive, and Fixer sends a qualified repair person to complete the task.

Frontdoor is taking a different approach to on-demand home services. The parent company of American Home Shield plans to offer on-demand home repair to those who purchase home warranties.

Motili, a business-to-business service provider, offers on-demand reactive HVAC and hot water repair and replacement services and helps single-family, multi-family and storage property managers proactively manage their entire HVAC and hot water portfolio.

Motili’s unique direct relationships with manufacturers and contractors enable the company to offer discounted equipment pricing and reduced operational costs for its customers.

The data Motili aggregates across clients and industries, provides customers with valuable industry benchmarks and detailed reporting.

“Our customers benefit from robust technology that quickly connects them with a national network of skilled technicians associated with Motili,” the company’s CEO Jeff Wilkins told HVACR Business. “We provide the simplicity of a single point of contact across the U.S.”

Auto Repair and Maintenance

Needing car repairs can be one of the most inconvenient and frustrating situations. After all, most of us need our cars to get to work, pick up the kids, buy groceries and so many other life tasks. So, who has time to put their car in the shop for what can sometimes turn into days at a time?

Fortunately, auto repair has also joined the on-demand stratosphere. Fiix has built a platform through which it matches customers to mechanics who will arrive on site to fix a car within hours of the request.

Fiix offers an app, but prefers customers call so an expert can accurately diagnose the issue and dispatch the most qualified professional with the necessary parts. The costs are right on-par with most repair shops and 30-percent less than dealership services, but the company’s main selling point is convenience. If the weather isn’t cooperating, Fiix will even tow a car to a nearby shop for free, then fix your car and return it.

Currently serving the Toronto market with plans to expand, Fiix is far from the only on-demand car repair business in the market. YourMechanic secured more than $32 million in venture financing – thanks in part to seed money from the likes of Ashton Kutcher – and serves hundreds of cities in 37 states.

YourMechanic offers more than 500 services, from basic oil changes to brakes, belts and air-conditioning replacement and repair. Customers access the company’s app or website and book an appointment. A mechanic will arrive at home, the office or wherever else the car might be parked to perform the repair.

“Consumers want on-demand services, and the ability to schedule and monitor auto repairs will play a key role in enhancing customer service and transforming the transportation sector,” Jeffrey Black, Director at Verizon Ventures, one of YourMechanic’s backers, told Vator News. “YourMechanic’s modern approach to auto service has been embraced by customers across the country who expect value, convenience and transparency.”

Device Service and Repair

Today’s consumers are practically glued to their electronic devices, whether they are smartphones, tablets or any of the emerging smart home accessories. And because we use them so frequently, we tend to break them. Replacing screens, batteries and ports have become common practices.

Just what the average consumer needs, right? Another repair stop-off during our already hectic and busy days. Fortunately, a variety of companies have brought electronics repair to the on-demand marketplace.

iCracked, which operates in more than 60 metro areas in the U.S. and Canada, was recently acquired by the Allstate Corporation. The company will send a technician to a customer’s location to repair a phone or tablet screen, including a lifetime warranty on the parts.

Likewise, CellSavers is an on-demand smartphone repair service. Like other apps, it connects users with technicians that will come to them and repair broken batteries and cracked screens – for about the same price as most local repair shops.

“We look at how Uber changed the way from hailing a taxi in the rain to pressing a few buttons from your mobile device, that’s how we look at the process,” CellSavers co-founder Itai Hirsch told TechCrunch. “It’s very limited interaction between the end-user and the technician. When you’re distressed, and you break your phone, it’s a low point in your day, and we try to create this positive experience. We see this as a lifeline, we want to make sure you aren’t without your device for more than 30 minutes.”

Puls, on the other hand, is taking on-demand device repair a step further by not only servicing smartphones and tablets but also mounting televisions, as well as setting up and servicing entire smart home systems. The company also repairs garage doors, sets up security systems and installs appliances.
